Propylene glycol is an anemone-free, colourless liquid used in the manufacture of consumer and industrial products. Generally recognized as safe (GRAS), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves its use as an intermediate food additive. Propylene glycol is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many other practical applications.
Pharmaceutical propylene glycol USP/EP is used as an inactive adjunct. As a means of transferring flavors in food and beverages, it helps to preserve the taste and moisture in pet and livestock feed and acts as a carrier of active ingredients found in cough syrup and gel capsules. Propylene glycol keeps personal hygiene products consistent, soft and moist. This includes stick deodorants, sunscreen, shampoos, body lotions, face creams and lipstick. In addition, it acts as a supplement to stabilize foam in personal care and healthcare products.
Industrial propylene glycol is used in industry as a heat carrier that protects against pressure cracking and corrosion, controls viscosity and dissolves active substances. It is also used in paints and coatings to protect against wear and weather conditions, as an aircraft defroster, in liquid detergents, antifreeze and as a solvent in printing ink. As a basic structural element, it is used in its raw form for the manufacture of plastic plastics, such as unsaturated polyester resins. Resins are used in windmill blades, furniture, marine structures, gelcoins, synthetic marble coatings, sheet metal molding mixtures and heavy impact surfaces such as floors.
Application in medicine:
For medicinal purposes, propylene glycol is used as a solvent in various formats: injected, oral and topical. For injectable medicines, 40% is propylene glycol. Side effects do not occur with normal use.
Aerolyzed forms of propylene glycol are used to create dense "smoke" without flames. Aerolyzed products are used by the United States military as a smokescreen to hide troop movements on the battlefield. Additionally, the product is also used to simulate smoke in various types of fire training procedures as well as theatrical productions, according to the CDC. Additional applications The largest amount of propylene glycol is found in the textile industry, where it is used for the production of polyester fibers.
